
Grasmere Lodge offers guided trips to visit the regions most spectacular environments.
We custom build the tour to your interests, whether you want to take in the mountain sights from our comfortable four wheel drive vehicle or hike through alpine meadows. We can combine activities to include hiking, kayaking, trout fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, botanising, bird watching, picnicking and most other outdoor activities you can think of. This is a great introductory tour to Arthur’s Pass National Park, 25 kilometres west of the lodge. This is mainly a sightseeing drive along the historic goldminer’s road; however opportunities are available to walk amongst alpine wildflowers and beech forest - and for the athletically inclined hobbit-filled gorges and waterfalls. We should also encounter the cheeky kea, the world’s only true alpine parrot.

Don your hiking boots and join us for a guided hike in the surrounding National Park or Limestone mountains. We can offer a selection of walks, depending on distance, weather and conditions. Stride up a long ridges past tarns (small lakes) to mountaintop viewpoints; boulder hop alpine rivers to their glacial source; clamber around rugged limestone outcrops; or roam through wild beech forests. We take refreshment such as tea and coffee and on longer trips a picnic lunch.

We drive west over the precipice of Arthur’s pass into rainforest country. We take a short walk in an ancient forest reserve containing native birds such as Kereru, Tui and Bellbird, and inspect tiny orchids and massive thousand year old Rimu trees.
We pass by historic gold-mining areas and the real Wild West saloon of Jackson’s Tavern, built in 1870. We then continue our trip to the beautiful coastal scenery at Punakaiki in Paparoa National Park.

If you like the farm tour yo will love this one. We drive across the Waimakariri River into the big sky country where Arthur’s Pass National Park meets the eighty thousand acre Mt White Station. The scenery is stunning as we traverse river flats then high glacial terraces above the river. This area good for an explore on a rainy afternoon.

Explore the nearby mountain lakes in our modern stable kayaks. The scenery on calm days is outstanding even by New Zealand terms, and there is the opportunity to trout fish and picnic on secluded beaches.
A guided trip is the best chance to spot the rare crested Grebe and other wildlife.
Join Graeme for a walk along the trails around the lodge for a look natural history of the unique high country. We look at both the native and introduced flora and fauna and explain the geological processes that formed our valley and mountains. There is a diverse range of ecosystems close by ranging from Mountain Beech forest to dry valley riverbed to tussock grassland.
We operate conservation programmes involving forest regeneration, native birdlife protection and habitat enhancement and would be happy to show you our progress and success in these areas.
