We have a number of good quality Y-frame Bauer mountain bikes with RST suspension available at the lodge for guests to borrow. Please wear one of the helmets provided, in accordance with health and safety requirements. It is illegal not to wear a helmet when cycling on public roads in New Zealand.
The hiking trails on Grasmere are best enjoyed on foot, but a mountain bike can get you swiftly to some of our favourite places a little out of walking range.
In most cases you will have to ride for a few minutes at the side of the main road, then down gravel country roads used only by the occasional local farmer or fisherman, before reaching trails more suitable for bikes only.
There is little heavy traffic on the main highway compared to most countries or cities.
Good destinations with a picnic are the south end of Lake Grasmere; Lake Sarah, down Craigieburn road; or Andrews Shelter, on the Mt White road.
In the Craigieburn State Forest Park, to the south of Grasmere, mountain bikes are permitted on skifield roads and those bush tracks signposted as “Open to cycling use.”
Alternatively, consider helicoptering into a remote location with a guide for a real wilderness experience. We can discuss your options in more detail by email, if you are interested.
