To reach Grasmere Lodge from Dunedin, drive north on State Highway One, through Oamaru, Timaru and Temuka. Oamaru is well-known for its impressive architecture made of local limestone, down near the harbour, and it’s a pleasant drive through rolling countryside.
About seven kilometres north of Temuka at a village named Winchester, turn left onto SH 72, and continue north through Geraldine.
Geraldine is probably the last town with cafes etc for lunch. We recommend Barker’s Bakery or the café in front of that. Actually, the pub meals at the Geraldine Licensing Trust hotel in the main street are quite good too, and nice surroundings.
Drive through to Sheffield/Waddington, where you turn left again onto SH 73. That’s the road Grasmere is on, about an hour further on.
Springfield, just up the road from Sheffield, is the last place for some distance to fill up your petrol tank.
