From Kaikoura, follow State Highway 1 south through Waipara and Amberley, to a little place called Woodend.
Waipara is becoming known as a region of fine pinot noir, and several vineyards are open for tasting. Pegasus Bay and Canterbury House are nice places to lunch.
Amberley is 10 km south of Waipara, and its Norwester Café (on the left) is a good spot for a cup of coffee or something more substantial.
Woodend is about 21 km south of Amberley. Turn inland here on SH 72, through Rangiora and Oxford, then over the Waimakariri River to Sheffield, where you turn right onto SH 73, heading for the mountains.
Stay on SH 73 for another 70km to reach us, but be aware Springfield is the last gas station for about 100km. (You could stay on SH 1 all the way into Christchurch and then get straight onto SH 73 there, following signs for Darfield and Arthur’s Pass, if you want to see the city before you come up into the hills, but obviously this is more driving.)
