Driving to Grasmere

From Queenstown or Wanaka via Tekapo

Coming from Queenstown or Wanaka in one day, drive north on State Highway 6 to Cromwell, where you’ll turn to the left onto State Highway 8. Take that over the Lindis Pass, through Omarama and Tekapo to Fairlie. Turn left there onto SH 79 to Geraldine.

You can have lunch at the Old Library Café in Fairlie, or at Barker’s Bakery in Geraldine. Actually, the pub meals at the Geraldine Licensing Trust hotel in the main street are very good too, and nice surroundings.

Turn left just by Barker’s at Geraldine, onto SH 72, and drive through to Sheffield/Waddington, where you turn left again onto SH 73. That’s the road Grasmere is on, about an hour further on.

Springfield, just up the road from Sheffield, is the last place for some distance to fill up your petrol tank.

All the turns you need are well-signposted. Take some time to stop at Lake Pukaki to admire Mount Cook if it’s clear, and you might like to drive down to the water at Lake Tekapo and see the monument to McKenzie’s dog, and all the other sheepdogs that are the backbone of high country farming. McKenzie was a sheep rustler who discovered the McKenzie Basin (between Burke’s Pass and the Lindis), with thousands of acres of grazing.
