Follow the directions to reach Queenstown in one day, then as you approach Queenstown, turn to the left at the airport turnoff, at the entrance to Queenstown, following signs for Frankton, Kingston and Te Anau.
State Highway 6 will take you along the foot of the Remarkables mountain range, beside the eastern arm of Lake Wakatipu, to Kingston at the foot of the lake. Continue on another 44 km to just before Lumsden, and follow the signs onto Highway 94 to Te Anau, 78 km past the turnoff. Just to make you feel at home, Lumsden is named after one of Vicki’s ancestors.
It’s probably a good idea to fill up your gas tank at Queenstown, if not before, and buy some bug spray for Te Anau and Milford Sound, against the sandflies and mosquitoes.
